Did you know that in 2011, 2.5 million Baby Boomers will turn 65 – and by the end of 2011 there will be over 41 million Americans age 65 and older? Older adults are beginning to take stock of their health and have begun hitting the gym to get the physical activity they need to stave off chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and high blood pressure just to name a few. Regular physical activity has beneficial effects on all the systems of the body and consequently prevents a broad range of health problems and diseases.
Keep in mind you are never too old to exercise! Physical activity is likely to keep you feeling and looking young versus living a sedentary lifestyle. Activities that help build muscle strength, improve balance and promote walking significantly reduce the risk of falls. Can you still balance on one foot…?
The Southeastern Indiana YMCA is holding a "100 Miles In 100 Days" Fitness Challenge to help encourage regular physical activity throughout the summer months. While gardening, yard work and summer walks are all physical activities, the benefits that you receive from a structured fitness program that includes resistance training, balance, cardiovascular training and flexibility are different. This type of fitness program keeps you able-bodied to continue doing those activities that you enjoy.
The fitness challenge will be running June 1st – August 31st. SilverSneakers® members and those who attend SilverSneakers® classes will accumulate miles depending on what activity they participate in with the final goal to be a total of 100 miles during the 100 days of summer. Prizes will be awarded to those who complete the challenge.
