Frequently Asked Questions

MEMBERSHIP

If I join SIY, can I go to any YMCA?

With the exception of metropolitan YMCA’s, most YMCA’s are independent and are not interchangeable on a regular basis.  However, SIY is part of the AWAY program.  The AWAY program is a courtesy when you are away from your home YMCA (travelling on business, vacation, etc.)  Each YMCA may set their own restrictions regarding usage of their facility by AWAY members.

Do I have to join for a year?

We do sell yearly memberships.  Members may pay for a year in full, which is good for one full year from the day they join. Members may also  choose our monthly payment plan through bankdraft.  With bankdraft a member pays their first month of membership up front and then will be drafted for succeeding months through a checking or savings account.  Bankdrafts may be cancelled at any time by the 24th of any month.  However, if a member has not been on the bankdraft plan for a year and cancels and then decides to return as a member in less than a year, we ask that they pay for a year in full rather than using the bankdraft plan again.  Membership cancellation must be done in writing by completing an exit survey.

Do I have to pay the Joiner’s Fee more than once?

The Joiner’s Fee is paid only once, unless you let your membership expire longer than 60 days.

What is included with a membership?

A membership gives you access to the facility as well as most adult fitness classes at no extra charge.  Any class that carries a fee will be less for members than potential members and members may sign up for limited classes before potential members.  You will also receive a Class Schedule in the mail to let you know what activities will be coming up.

What does income based membership rates mean?

Membership rates can be based on total household income and number of dependents.

What information will I need to give to get income based rates?

We will ask to see your most recent Federal 1040 income tax form.  This could be 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ.  This form will be in your prepared tax packet.

Can I just bring in my W2?

We need to see a Federal 1040 form that shows total income for your household, as well as number of dependents.

What if I don’t file taxes?

Special circumstances may be reviewed by appointment.

Why do I have to swipe my membership card if the door is already open?

Each family member age 8 and older receives a membership card

and should use their card as they go through the door.

As a card is swiped, it checks the member in as well as opens the door.

Using a membership card allows the Member Service staff to recognize members

and helps to ensure the value of a membership by allowing only members to access the facility.

(If a membership card is lost, no one else will be able to use it as a member picture shows on the door computer when a card is swiped).

This assures security as well as maintaining membership statistics.

If a family member does not have their card with them, we ask that they sign in at the Desk.

What happens if I or my kids lose a membership card?

You may purchase a new card for $2.00.

What can my kids do while I am working out?

Children age 8 and older can be in certain parts of the building by themselves without a parent present.

They may use the recreation center, the gymnasium and the pool.

Children under 8 must be directly supervised by an adult 16 or older and can be in those same areas,

or may use the Toyroom (ages 6 weeks thru 7 years)  or use Child Watch (ages 4-7).

Information is available at the Member Service Desk.

There are also a variety of programs available for all age groups (see Class Schedule).

Can my child be on the indoor track with me?

Children age 10 or 11 may be on the indoor track with a parent by their side.

They may begin using the indoor track by themselves at age 12.

Will it cost anything if I want to bring a guest with me?

As a new member, you will receive a welcome letter containing two free day passes for you to use for your guests.

A day pass can be used for a family (parents and their own children), adults or children.  Adults and families may come in on their own, but a child under 16 must be accompanied by a member or an adult 16 or older.  Day passes are always available for a fee of $18- Family, $12- adult, $9-Senior (62 or older), $7-Youth (4 thru high school).  Children age 3 and under are free.

AQUATICS

When can I use the pool?

A portion of the pool is available to members at all times.

A pool schedule is available to show what activities are going on at different times of the day.

This will allow you to choose the best time for your needs

Do I have to be in the water while my child swims?

Any child under the age of 8 must be directly supervised and  have an adult 16 years or older in the water with them.   A secure swim diaper must be used for those children not yet potty trained.

A child 8 or older may be in the pool without an adult.

To be in the deep end of the pool, a child must be able to swim the length of the pool.

FITNESS

Do I have to schedule an Orientation in the fitness center?

We encourage all new members to get a free “orientation” in the fitness area.

During this orientation, our knowledgeable fitness staff will show you how to set up and use the fitness equipment and will be able to answer your general fitness questions.

Group orientation times are available on a regular basis throughout the week.

We also have personal trainers available by appointment for a fee.

What is a fitness Orientation?

Orientations are very important for safety and effectiveness in the weight room.

Please take the time to participate -  they are free!

What is some advice for new members taking a fitness class?

We encourage all new members to arrive 10 minutes early to fitness classes.

Please introduce yourself and let the fitness instructor your level (beginner, intermediate or advanced).

This will help us greatly enhance your class experience and comfort level.

What is age requirement for Fitness area?

Children age 12 thru 15 may use the fitness area after completing a free youth strength training class.  They may sign up for this by contacting the Fitness office.

16 years and older my sign up for an orientation.
